Terna spa has published its 2009 Sustainability Report at:
http://ethicalperformance.com/reports/links/terna10

The report, prepared in accordance with the Electric Utilities Sector Supplement of the GRI-G3 guidelines, has been externally checked with the highest level A+ in terms of the completeness of the information.

It outlines how Terna, the main owner of the Italian high-voltage National Transmission Grid, and the largest independent transmission operator in Europe, has performed on the economic, environmental and social issues most material to its business across its base of more than 56000 km of transmission lines managed in Italy.

Bucking the downward trend of the world economy and many companies, Terna had positive results in terms of revenue, margins, and dividends, but especially investment that constitute a contribution with anti-cyclical effects, supporting the economy and employment, ensuring Italy essential infrastructure.

Key highlights from the past year include:

the first cable of the SAPEI (a 435-km undersea segment at a maximum depth of 1,600 metres), connecting Sardinia and the mainland- an investment of 700 million euro - went into operation

a considerable increase of efficiency to provide the dispatching service (the real time management of energy flow) was achieved. The increase in efficiency entailed a saving of about 800 million euro for the electrical system

continued cooperation with WWF and the Italian League for bird protection (LIPU) to reduce the impacts and maximize the positive effects of the interaction between electric transmission lines and the biodiversity of Italy

an agreement signed with the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police) to prevent the risk of criminal infiltration in the supply chain

a programme to reduce the consumption per kilometre of the company's vehicle fleet, which in 2009 led to an 11.1 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions per kilometre driven

environmental investments of more than 42 million euro, calculated for the first time.

The report also outlines Terna's 2009 progress on its environmental-social-governance profile, having ranked third in the Accountability Rating Italy, and been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index World.
